Glister: The Faerie Host

Out January 4th 2010

The third book in a delightfully quirky and funny series for girls told in comic-strip and featuring Glister Butterworth – girl-magnet for the weird and unusual.

It is coming up to Halloween and already Glister's father is bustling around getting ready for Christmas! The Butterworths are putting up decorations for the tree and making preparations for the big day, but Glister is sad – her mother is missing and Christmas just wouldn't be the same without her. She is determined to find her mum and solve the mystery of her disappearance. However, boundary changes in the area mean Faerieland and Whixleyshire's borders now meet right outside Glister's front door. Once Glister has ventured into Faerieland in search of her beloved lost mum, very strange things start to happen and her biggest challenge will be finding her way home again.

Goblins

Those pesky Goblins (see them in Glister: The Family Tree)
are out carol singing early again. If you hear their caterwauling
outside your door, push some food out through the letterbox
for them. Do not approach. They bite.

Tree

Working through some ideas for
Glister: The Family Tree.

I'm on a panel at the YLG conference at the University of Warwick
tomorrow. 'Reading Between the Panels' is chaired by Dr. Mel Gibson
(the other one) and I'll be chatting with John Dunning ('Salem
Brownstone' Walker Books) and Chris Wooding ('Malice' Scholastic)
followed by signing books and whatnot.
If you're a Youth librarian I hope to see you there.

The Birmingham (UK) show is creeping up. I'm sharing a table with the
lovely Will of Butternut Comics:

Don't have a table number as yet, but will let you know as soon as I do.
Btw, I won't be selling the Walker Glister books myself, but have been
assured that they will be available from retailers there.

A review of Glister from the august Financial Times!

“A sweet little tale with masses of quirky detail and rather a lot more bite than a lot of books aimed at girls under the age of 10.” Financial Times (UK & Ireland Edition), August 8th

Haunted Teapots

Tomorrow is officially the start of the school hols
round these parts, so it's time to get drawing!
If you have a copy of Glister: The Haunted Teapot
you'll know there's a teapot-shaped space to
design your own haunted teapot on the inside
back cover.
Please e-mail me your designs as a .jpg file and
I'll send out a Glister sketch to those who come up
with my faves (by post or by e-mail). If you're happy
to have your pics on the blog let me know and
I'll post them here. You don't have to use the actual
template in the book, you can start getting
creative on any old piece of paper and e-mail them
to: glister@andiwatson.biz
IMPORTANT: If you're under 18 please get permission
from a grown up before sending your drawings.
This is open to all-ages so get scribbling regardless
of how old or young you are.

Finding Glister?

Detail from Glister: The Family Tree.

The first two Glister books are out but friends and family have been
asking me where they can find a copy.
If you're wanting to walk into a book shop and buy a copy off the
shelves the best bet is your local children's bookshop, if you're
fortunate to have one close by. Borders are supporting the book
with separate displays for kid's comics (so I hear), and they're online.
Waterstone's availability is rather patchy but Amazon have both books.

Glister: The Family Tree

Out March 1st 2010
  • Paperback: 80 pages
  • Publisher: Walker Books Ltd
  • ISBN-10: 140632051X
  • ISBN-13: 978-1406320510
This is the fourth book in this delightfully quirky and funny series for girls told in comic-strip and featuring Glister Butterworth - girl-magnet for the weird and unusual. Glister and her father live at Chilblain Hall - home to an orchard with a remarkable collection of trees. Not least, the very special Butterworth Tree. It is said that when the Butterworth Tree blooms, a bumper crop of Butterworth relatives from past, present and future will fall. Of course, Glister longs to have a big family and dreams of cosseting aunts and devoted uncles, hoping upon hope that the tree may even bear fruit of the famed Butterworth Giant...Then, one day, her dream finally comes true. Indeed, a bumper crop of relatives does fall, but they are not so keen on playing Happy Families and soon Glister needs a swift and effective plan to stop the Butterworths from pulling themselves and Chilblain Hall apart, with quite astonishing results! Glister is a charming and eccentric, resourceful and intelligent little female heroine who will find fans in new readers as well as the many followers of Andi Watson too. Andi's distinctive illustration style, his fresh take on fairytale storytelling, and his imaginative design and layout, make the "Glister" series of books standout works of illustrated fiction.
